Keep Your Smile Beautiful for Life

At Smile Makers Orthodontics, retainers are the key to protecting your investment and keeping your smile straight long after orthodontic treatment is complete. Whether you've finished braces or Invisalign, wearing your retainer as directed helps prevent teeth from shifting and preserves your beautiful results for years to come.

A healthy smile doesn't end when treatment does—it enters its retention phase.

Our Retainer Protocol

At Smile Makers Orthodontics, finishing braces or clear aligner treatment is an exciting milestone—but keeping your teeth in their new positions is just as important. That’s where retainers come in. Our retainer protocol protects your new smile while giving us the flexibility to meet your individual needs and preferences.

Our Standard Retainer Approach

For most patients, we recommend a combination of a fixed lingual retainer on the lower front teeth and a clear Essix retainer over the entire upper arch.

The fixed lower retainer is a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth. Because it stays in place, it prevents those teeth from shifting without requiring you to remember to put it in each night.

The upper Essix retainer is removable, clear, and custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth. Its low-profile design makes it a comfortable and discreet way to maintain your upper smile.

What If I Don’t Want a Fixed Retainer?

We understand that a fixed lower retainer isn’t everyone’s preference. Some adults and parents of teen patients prefer a fully removable option.

In those cases, we can provide a lower Essix retainer instead of the fixed lingual retainer. Like the upper Essix, it fits over the teeth and can be removed as directed.

Finding the Right Retainer for Your Smile

Retention isn’t one-size-fits-all. While we have a standard protocol that works well for most patients, we’ll consider your individual treatment, needs, and preferences when recommending your retainers.

No matter which type of retainer you receive, following your wear and care instructions is essential. Consistent retention helps protect the time and effort you put into orthodontic treatment so you can enjoy your new smile for years to come.

Protecting Your Results in Rockwall

Your teeth naturally want to shift over time, even after successful orthodontic treatment. That's why wearing a retainer is one of the most important parts of maintaining your new smile.

At Smile Makers Orthodontics, Dr. Hsu offers several types of custom retainers to match your needs, lifestyle, and treatment plan. Every retainer is designed to keep your teeth in their ideal positions while providing a comfortable, secure fit.

Whether you need a removable retainer or a fixed option, our team will recommend the solution that's best for protecting your long-term results.

Essix Retainers

Clear, comfortable, and nearly invisible, Essix retainers are one of the most popular options for maintaining your smile after orthodontic treatment.

How Essix Retainers Work

Using digital scans of your teeth, Dr. Hsu creates a custom-fitted clear retainer that fits snugly over your smile. Because they're removable and virtually invisible, Essix retainers make it easy to protect your results while fitting seamlessly into your daily routine.

Fixed Retainers

Some smiles benefit from additional long-term support.

How Fixed Retainers Work

A fixed retainer consists of a thin wire bonded behind the lower front teeth to help prevent unwanted movement. When appropriate, Dr. Hsu may recommend a fixed retainer in combination with a removable retainer to provide the best long-term stability for your smile.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers have been trusted for decades and remain a dependable option for long-term smile retention.

How Hawley Retainers Work

Made with a durable acrylic base and a thin metal wire, Hawley retainers are custom-made to fit your smile after braces or Invisalign treatment. They can also be adjusted if minor tooth movement occurs, making them a durable and versatile long-term solution.

Theroux Phase 1 Retainers

Theroux retainers help children maintain their Phase 1 orthodontic results while their remaining permanent teeth continue to erupt.

How Theroux Retainers Work

Made from clear, durable plastic, Theroux retainers are custom-fit to your child’s smile and can typically be made and delivered the same day or the following morning. Dr. Hsu monitors your child’s growth and retainer fit to help maintain their smile until Phase 2 treatment.

In-House Retainers

When you need a replacement quickly, our in-house retainers offer convenience without sacrificing quality.

How In-House Retainers Work

At Smile Makers Orthodontics, we use digital scans and advanced in-office technology to create custom clear retainers designed specifically for your smile. Producing retainers in-house often allows for faster turnaround times and makes replacing lost or damaged retainers easier.

Caring for Your Retainer

Wearing your retainer consistently is the best way to maintain your orthodontic results. A few simple habits can help keep both your retainer and your smile in excellent condition.

Follow these instructions to ensure your confident smile lasts a lifetime:

  • Wear your retainers whenever you’re home unless we tell you otherwise. You can remove them to eat and brush your teeth and to swim or play contact sports.
  • Bring your retainer to follow-up appointments so we can make sure your retainer still fits correctly.
  • Keep your retainer case with you so your retainers stay safe when you’re not wearing them. Always placing them in your case can prevent costly replacements.
  • Call us to schedule an appointment as soon as possible if you notice that your retainer doesn’t fit properly or is cracked or broken.
  • Call us right away if you lose your retainer. The longer you go without a retainer, the more quickly and likely your teeth will shift out of alignment.
  • Clean your retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and warm—but not hot—water. This helps remove plaque and eliminate odors.
  • Practice talking, reading, or singing out loud while wearing your retainer so your mouth adjusts quickly.
  • Keep your retainers away from heat—including hot water, hot cars, the washing machine or dryer, and even your pockets—so they don’t warp and break easily.
  • Treat your retainers with care and they’ll last as long as you need them to during your retention phase.

Life After Braces: What to Expect

The day your braces come off is the start of the retention phase — the part of treatment that keeps the smile you just earned exactly where Dr. Hsu put it.

The First Few Weeks

After your braces or Invisalign treatment is complete, your teeth need time to stabilize in their new positions. During this period, you'll wear your retainer as instructed to help protect your results.

Building a Routine

Before long, wearing your retainer becomes part of your daily routine. Consistent wear is the best way to prevent unwanted tooth movement and preserve your smile.

Long-Term Smile Maintenance

Even years after orthodontic treatment, teeth naturally tend to shift. That's why Dr. Hsu typically recommends wearing your retainer at night for life to keep your smile looking its best.
